I think that this is a strong idea because real people do connect to reality television shows because they want their lives to be like the people on the shows. At the same time I think that it is not totally strong because of the digital editing that we learned about in class. This allows the scenes in the shows to be made into something different then what it originally was and I don't think that real people always realize that this is happening with the reality television shows they watch.

Reality Television
I think that when Klosterman says that
real people are starting to act like the archetypes they see on television his
main point is that real people use the people they see on reality television
shows as their role models because they think they are great people and they
want to be just like them. Having the option to watch reality television shows
gives real people the chance to connect with the people on the show based on
the way they act and then connecting it to their selves. Real people also
connect with the people on reality television shows because they see how
perfect their lives are and then they want their lives to be like that without
having to worry about anything.

You are correct people do connect with reality T.V., but I don't think because they want their lives to be like the people on the show. I mean who wants 16 and Pregnant, Honey Boo Boo, or Bridezilla, they are not Role models. I don't know of a Reality T.V personality that is a true role model, Their lives are not perfect, we all know about the 72 day marriage.
ReplyDeletePeople I don't believe act like the archetypes on T.V. because they are universal and who strives to be one dimensional as Chuck says they are. We do see those characteristics in ourselves or each other, but the archetype was here long before Reality T.V., and we are much more than one dimensional.
I agree with your point of digital editing possibly portraying them as something or someone they are not just for ratings, then they are shocked at the portrayal of themselves. But signing up for dating and making out with everyone in a house to get to a final rose is bound to have some drama, fighting, and slut shaming.
